Why Reddit Account Age Matters

On Reddit, account age is one of the most quietly important signals you can carry. It shows up nowhere on a user's profile in a flashy way, but it shapes how moderators, automod filters, and even other users treat you. A six-year-old account is given the benefit of the doubt in places where a six-week-old account gets removed instantly.

The tool above tells you the exact creation date of any public Reddit account, broken down into years, months, and days, along with how that age compares against the platform as a whole.

Why Mods and Automod Care About Age

Reddit's spam and abuse problem is constant. New accounts are the cheapest tool spammers have, so every subreddit of any size builds defenses against them. The most common defense is an automod rule that auto-removes posts from accounts under a certain age, often somewhere between seven and ninety days.

These rules are invisible to most users. You post, see your post appear in your own feed, and assume it went live. It did not. It was filtered into the mod queue or removed silently. The reason is almost always that your account is too new for the community's filter.

Established accounts skip past these filters entirely. That alone makes account age a real asset for anyone serious about Reddit marketing, AMAs, or any kind of long-term participation.

What Counts as an Old Account

There is no formal definition, but rough working categories based on what mods and communities tend to expect:

Under 30 days is considered brand new. Expect heavy automod filtering, especially in communities with strict anti-spam rules. Most marketers should not attempt promotional content from an account this young.

One to three years is established. Most subreddits will treat you as a normal user. You will still hit some karma-based gates, but age is no longer your bottleneck.

Three to seven years is veteran. You carry visible credibility. Mods give you slack. Communities trust contributions from accounts in this range more than they should.

Over ten years is OG territory. Accounts this old were created when Reddit was a fundamentally smaller and weirder place. They are treated as platform elders, sometimes deservedly, sometimes not.

Using Account Age for Marketing Decisions

If you are evaluating whether to use an existing account or start fresh, account age is the deciding factor. An aged account with even modest karma is worth more than a new account with high karma, because karma can be farmed quickly while age cannot be faked.

If you are buying or inheriting an account, check the age before anything else. Sellers sometimes inflate karma with throwaway subreddit posts. They cannot inflate age.

If you are checking a competitor or influencer, account age tells you whether they actually built their presence or whether they bought it. A two-year-old account with 500,000 karma was almost certainly purchased or farmed aggressively. A ten-year-old account with the same karma probably built it organically.

What to Do With a New Account

If the tool tells you your account is younger than you would like, do not give up on it. Spend the first month commenting and participating in communities you actually use. Build a small posting history with no promotional content at all. Once you cross the thirty-day mark with some karma in your wallet, most subreddit filters will start letting you through.

RedShip helps you find the right communities and conversations to participate in from day one, so your new account starts compounding credibility immediately instead of bouncing off automod filters.
