On Reddit itself, the creation date is the account's cake day. On the website, it appears in the profile details as the date the user joined. How old is Reddit?

Reddit was founded on June 23, 2005, by Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian. It turned 20 in June 2025. The founders' accounts, u/spez and u/kn0thing, are among the very first ones, created that same month. No account can be older than mid-2005.

Why Reddit account age matters

Account age is one of the quiet signals that decide what happens to your posts. It shows nowhere in a flashy way, yet moderators, AutoMod filters and other users all look at it.

New accounts are the cheapest tool spammers have, so almost every large subreddit filters them. The most common rule removes posts and comments from accounts younger than a set age, often somewhere between a few days and three months. The rule is invisible: you post, you see your post, and nobody else does.

Subreddit account age requirements

Most communities do not publish their exact thresholds, because that would help spammers get around them. To find out whether a subreddit has one:

• Read the rules and the sidebar. Some communities state a minimum account age or karma.
• Check the wiki, often linked from the sidebar, for posting requirements.
• Watch for removals. If your posts vanish in one community and nowhere else, an age or karma filter is the usual reason.

What counts as an old account

There is no official scale. The checker labels each account with the tiers communities use in practice:

• New (under 30 days): expect heavy filtering in large communities.
• Active (1 month to 1 year): most filters stop applying, a few strict communities still hold you back.
• Established (1 to 3 years): treated as a normal user almost everywhere.
• Veteran (3 to 7 years): visible credibility with moderators and members.
• Old-school (7 to 12 years) and OG (12 years and more): early accounts, from a time when Reddit was far smaller.

Age and karma together

Age means little without activity, and the checker shows both. A few patterns are worth knowing:

• Old account, very little karma: a lurker, or an account that sat unused. Communities treat it better than a new one, but not as a regular.
• Young account, very high karma: unusual. It can be one viral post, karma farming, or a bought account. Age cannot be faked, which is why it is the first thing to check on an account you are about to trust or buy.
• Steady karma over many years: the profile of a real long-time member.

What to do with a new account

If your account is too young for the communities you want, do not start with promotion. Spend the first weeks commenting where you have nothing to sell, in communities you actually use. By the time most age filters stop applying, you also have a history that moderators can read.
