What Is Reddit Karma
Reddit karma is the point system that tracks how much other users have upvoted your contributions. Every upvote on a post adds to your post karma. Every upvote on a comment adds to your comment karma. The two numbers added together make up your total karma, which is the headline figure Reddit shows on most profile views.
The tool above gives you the exact breakdown for any public Reddit account. You see total karma, the post and comment split, awarder and awardee karma where present, and a rough percentile estimate against the rest of the platform.
Why Karma Matters
The honest answer is that karma is partly social currency and partly a gate-keeping signal. The social part is easy: a username with high karma carries more weight in discussions. People assume that a user with 50,000 karma has been around, knows the unwritten rules, and can be trusted with the basics.
The gate-keeping part is more practical. Most active subreddits have automod rules that filter or remove posts from accounts under a certain karma threshold. Some use combined karma, some use just comment karma, some use just post karma. The numbers vary, but anything under 100 karma will get filtered out of a large fraction of communities. Once you cross 1,000 karma you stop hitting those filters in most places.
If you are using Reddit for marketing, growth, or any kind of strategic posting, karma is the single number that decides whether your content reaches an audience at all.
Post Karma vs Comment Karma
These two numbers tell different stories about how someone uses Reddit.
A profile with high post karma and low comment karma is usually a poster, not a participant. Submitting links, asking questions, sharing content. They show up, they post, they leave. This profile is associated with link spammers, content aggregators, and people who treat Reddit as a publishing platform.
A profile with high comment karma and modest post karma is the inverse. They participate in discussions, answer questions, leave thoughtful replies. This is the profile shape that most Reddit communities trust, and it is the shape that most successful Reddit marketers build over time.
The healthiest ratio for a marketing-focused account is comment karma exceeding post karma by a comfortable margin. Mods looking at your profile see participation, not promotion.
Karma Per Day
The tool above also calculates karma per day, dividing total karma by account age in days. This is a quick measure of how actively the account contributes.
A casual account might sit around 1 to 5 karma per day. A serious participant runs 20 to 50. Power users in active communities can hit hundreds per day. Numbers wildly above that often indicate karma farming, repost-bot behavior, or a single viral post inflating the average.
For marketing accounts, aim for a steady upward trend rather than spikes. Communities tend to trust accounts whose karma grows consistently over years more than accounts that spiked once and went silent.
How to Increase Karma the Right Way
The fastest legitimate way to grow karma is to participate in communities you genuinely use, write helpful comments, and avoid anything that looks like promotion for the first several months of a new account. Subreddits like r/AskReddit, r/explainlikeimfive, and r/NoStupidQuestions are popular karma builders because comments are the main content and high-quality answers rise quickly.
Avoid karma farming subreddits and repost bots. Reddit's spam detection has become aggressive, and accounts built through farming patterns often end up shadowbanned the moment they try to post something real.
RedShip helps you find subreddits where your contributions can earn karma and reach the right audience at the same time, so karma-building doubles as marketing.
