What Is Reddit Karma

Reddit karma is the score that reflects how much other users have upvoted your contributions. Upvotes on your posts add to your post karma, upvotes on your comments add to your comment karma, and the total is the number Reddit shows on your profile.

How to check karma on Reddit

Your own karma. On the Reddit app or website, open your profile: the total is shown there. Depending on the version you use, the post and comment split is in the profile details. The checker above always shows both.

Anyone's karma. Open their profile on Reddit, or type their username in the checker above to get the full breakdown on one screen, without logging in.

Karma in one subreddit. Reddit does not show it on profiles. On old.reddit.com, your own profile sidebar has a "show karma breakdown by subreddit" link, and it only works for your own account. Moderators' AutoMod rules can still use it, which is why a subreddit can block you while your total karma looks fine.

Does one upvote equal one karma?

No. Karma follows upvotes, but it is not a one-to-one count. Reddit applies its own calculation, and a post with 1,000 upvotes usually adds less than 1,000 karma. Downvotes can lower it, and very popular posts tend to add less karma per vote. Treat karma as an approximate score, not a vote tally.

What is a good karma score?

Reddit publishes no official scale, but communities read karma in roughly the same way:

• Under 100: a new account. Many subreddits filter posts from accounts this low.
• 100 to 1,000: a regular user. Most karma filters stop applying around 1,000.
• 1,000 to 10,000: an established account, clearly active for a while.
• 10,000 and more: a lot. This is an active community member.
• 50,000 and more: a heavy contributor, in the top few percent of accounts.

A good score also depends on age. 5,000 karma on a ten-year-old account is quiet. 5,000 karma on a two-week-old account is unusual, and moderators notice it.

Who has the most karma on Reddit?

Reddit keeps no official leaderboard, and the top of the ranking moves as active accounts keep posting. The accounts named most often are long-time power users. u/GallowBoob, for example, was known for years as the account with the most karma on the site.

Post karma vs comment karma

The two numbers tell different stories.

High post karma, low comment karma is a poster, not a participant: someone who submits links or content and rarely joins the discussion. Link spammers and content aggregators have this shape.

High comment karma, modest post karma is a participant: someone who answers questions and joins discussions. This is the shape communities trust, and the one most successful Reddit marketers build over time. Moderators who open your profile see participation, not promotion.

Karma per day

The checker divides total karma by account age in days. A casual account sits around 1 to 5 karma a day, a serious participant around 20 to 50, and power users in big communities far more. A very high rate on a young account usually means one viral post, karma farming or repost bots.

How to increase karma the right way

Take part in communities you actually use, write comments that help, and avoid anything that looks like promotion during the first months of an account. Question-driven subreddits such as r/AskReddit, r/explainlikeimfive and r/NoStupidQuestions are where good answers rise fastest.
